SPACE AISBL was founded with a vision: to unite the European upstream space community under a common mission to improve research and development for the competitiveness of the European space sector.

The Founding Associations

The founding members are the 5 main representative associations of the space upstream sector, namely, Eurospace, SME4Space, ESRE, EASTRO and EASN.

Eurospace

Eurospace – a not-for-profit organisation incorporated under the French law of 1901 – fosters the development of space activities in Europe and promotes a better understanding of space industry related issues and problems. It gathers industry-relevant information and maintains permanent liaison with ESA (the European Space Agency), National Space Agencies (CNES/France, DLR/Germany, ASI/Italy) and in general any organisation using or compelling the use of space techniques such as the European governments or the European Union.

SME4Space

SME4SPACE is a not-for-profit organisation registered in Leuven under the Belgian Law.

The aim of SME4SPACE is to voice Space SMEs’ viewpoint in a coordinated way and to facilitate the access of SMEs to space activities in general and to ESA and EU programmes in particular.
More in details, the organisation pursues the following not for profit purposes:

  • Defining and defending common positions, representing the SMEs towards public authorities i.e. the European Space Agency, the European Union and its related agencies;
  • Organising seminars and information sessions;
  • Organising a network of SMEs in order to increase the possibilities to cooperate;
  • Carrying out research projects, participating at National, European and International calls in space and related activities. In particular the task of “Dissemination and Exploitation of Project Results” (under the voice “Impact”) suits very well the characteristics of SME4SPACE, being able to provide an added value thanks to the large number of SMEs it represents as well as the wide geographical coverage.

ESRE

The Association of the European Space Research Establishments (ESRE) was formally established in March 2016. Founded initially by five European member states, ESRE has grown significantly in the past two years, now encompassing leading research centres from eight countries: Poland (CBK), Italy (CIRA), Germany (DLR), Romania (INCAS), Spain (INTA), Netherlands (NLR), France (ONERA) and the Czech Republic (VZLU).

ESRE’s mission is clear: to foster stronger cooperation and facilitate joint Research and Development (R&D) activities among its members. By pooling their expertise and resources, these research centres aim to not only advance science and technology in the space domain, but also to bolster the competitiveness of the European space sector on the global stage. Furthermore, ESRE has a keen eye on the bigger picture, seeking to leverage space research to tackle grand societal challenges that affect us all.

EASTRO

The European Association of Space Technology Research Organisations (EASTRO) AISBL was founded by 15 Institutes from 11 European countries as a Belgian not for profit international association in February, 2023 as a spin-off from the EARTO (earto.eu) Space working group. The association represents Research and Technology Organisations (RTOs) with Space activities in Europe towards the ESA, the European Commission and other major Institutional and Industrial stakeholders in Europe and the World.

The parent RTO Institutes have more than 65,000 employees, with a combined turnover of more than 7,000 M€, of which Space R&I projects involve more than 3,000 scientists, engineers and annual research budgets exceeding 250 M€.

EASTRO members contribute to all areas of space in Europe, from advanced structures, satellite sub-systems and instruments to quantum technologies and the utilisation of remote sensing data for climate change analysis with the objective to create innovations with impact on societal goals with economic impact.

EASN

The European Aerospace Science Network (EASN) is an open association networking academia in aviation and space research with the aim to:

  • Structure Europe-wide academia thematically and regionally,
  • Create conditions for facilitating academic upstream research at national, European and international levels,
  • Support academia to respond to its key role within the European aerospace research community in incubating new knowledge and breakthrough technologies and
  • Disseminate knowledge, new technologies and innovation.

Currently EASN counts ~300 members, affiliated to almost all significant universities active in the European aerospace ecosystem. They represent all European countries.
